Pastor Nominating UPdate

September 22, 2016

A requirement of PC(USA)’s Mission Information Form that your PNC completed, was to select 10 “Leadership Competencies” that we are seeking in our new senior pastor. From a list of 30 provided on the form, we selected Preaching and Worship Leadership, Hopeful, Spiritual Maturity, Public Communicator, Technologically Savvy, Change Agent, Organizational Agility, Strategy and Vision, Motivator, and Bridge Builder. Compatible competencies between our choices and the candidate’s is one of the many things we are considering as we review applications.

We are having phone and Skype conversations with a number of the candidates. We listen to sermons on-line, make reference calls, and gather as much information as we can before taking the next step with a candidate.  We are inspired by the quality of candidates we’ve reviewed and we pray for discernment as we go forward.

Thank you for your continued support through prayer and words of encouragement.

September 8, 2016

Your PNC is guided by the Mission Study approved by our Session and by these words in The Book of Order of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) which states that “Teaching elders (also called Ministers of Word and Sacrament) shall in all things be committed to teaching the faith and equipping the saints for the work of ministry (Eph. 4:12). When they serve as preachers and teachers of the Word, they shall preach and teach the faith of the church so that the people are shaped by the pattern of the gospel and strengthened for witness and service.”

The PNC is evaluating candidates based on their preaching and teaching ability, their demonstrated leadership and their having shown a commitment
to service and witness. We are proud to share with them our own commitment to service and witness and our willingness to grow beyond what has become familiar.

The PNC has now received 115 names of potential candidates, and is continuing to consider 45 of them. We are having phone and Skype conversations with a number of the candidates.

Thank you for your continued support through prayer and words of encouragement.

August 25

Your PNC continues to receive recommendations of interesting, capable, and strong candidates for us to consider.

We continue to read about them, listen to their sermons (and in some cases, watch videos of their preaching), and we are beginning to have some initial phone conversations. We are pleased to continue to receive additional candidates. We do, though, want you to know that we are doing our due diligence with as much speed as is needed for our discernment. We continue to appreciate your support, patience and prayers.

With deep gratitude, Your PNC Members:

Since our last update to the congregation, the number of candidates that the PNC is considering has increased from 50 to 90. Most of these additional names came from highly respected pastors from across the country. The PNC reached out to these pastors and asked for names of the strongest candidates that they know.      -2016 PNC

Thank you all for your patience and prayers while we were working through steps necessary to enable us to begin receiving applications and recommendations for our new senior pastor. Having completed those requirements, we are able to contact candidates, select the ones we want to interview, and schedule interviews. We meet every week and are as eager as you are to meet our new senior pastor.

Below are the requirements we have met and the actions we are taking.

UPC’s Ministry Information Form (MIF) has been approved by our Session and the Presbytery and has been posted in the PC(USA) system.

The Pastor Nominating Committee is developing a process for handling the expected 200 names.

The MIF is available on the UPC web site at upc@upcaustin.org. The PNC welcomes your suggestions on candidates who meet the requirements of the MIF. Please send your suggestions to UPC.PNC.Austin@gmail.com

And as you can well appreciate, in order to respect the privacy of the candidates, the PNC is not able to share information on candidates being considered.

The PNC members are Bob Bridge, Chair, Rosanne Becker, Michael Dodd, Jon Eddison, Byron French, Meg McReynolds, Stephanie Morris, and Debbie Warden. We ask for your prayers and patience as we proceed.
