UPC Lenten Sermon Series 2016: “Questions on the Mind of God”
God gives us the strength to change those things which can and must be changed. And God helps us to confront those things that happen unfairly, for no good reason. God helps us deal with what is beyond our control, what can’t be changed. I used to think that we are where we are for a preordained reason. But I no longer believe that is true. We are where we are, and it is up to us whether there is a purpose in it or not. Places, circumstances and encounters aren’t inherently meaningful; we make them meaningful, we give them purpose. Sandy Sasso, God’s Echo
In considering how God helps us confront the things and circumstances of the world, we will look at questions God asks in the foundational stories of our faith.
Lent 1: Where Are You? Genesis 3: 1-13, 16-20
Lent 2: Where Is Your Brother? Genesis 4: 1-9
Lent 3: What Is in Your Hand? Exodus 4: 1-5
Lent 4: Why Are You Afraid? Exodus 14: 10-18
Lent 5: Whom Shall I Send? Isaiah 6: 1-8
God continues to ask us questions about where we are, what is happening in our world and what we’re doing about it. Our answers give meaning to the situation, reveal the strength we have to bring change where we can, and allow us to shake the dust off our feet and move on from those things to which we are not called.
