Festival of Lessons and Carols

Chancel Choir and Congregation

December 11, 2011

Our Chancel Choir brought us its annual Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols.  In music and Holy Scripture, it reveals anew each year the “tale of the loving purposes of God from the first days of our sin until the glorious Redemption brought us by this Holy Child”.  This traditional service had its origins about a century ago in Western England, is celebrated annually at King’s College chapel, Cambridge, as well as world-wide in English-speaking churches that have adopted the tradition for their own.

UPC’s Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols has been an Advent tradition since 2005 on the third Sunday of the season.  It is an especially beautiful way for us to recognize God’s extraordinary providence in offering us, Humankind, the gift of free will to choose God‘s way for us.  The service also celebrates, in Word and song God’s gift of redemption through Jesus’ birth and His presence among us on earth.

The Lessons & Carols service has its own tradition; certain elements are repeated every year:  The same processional, the same concluding carol, God’s story encapsulated in the same nine Scripture readings.  However, the carols change each year; some return from previous years and some are new but each illuminates in some unique way the Lesson it follows.  This year’s service brought us seven carols and anthems that are new.
