The Festival of Lessons & Carols

Chancel Choir and Congregation

December 12, 2010

Since 2005 UPC’s Festival of Lessons & Carols Service has been an Advent tradition for us on the third Sunday of the season.  It is a beautiful way for us to recognize God’s extraordinary providence, not only in offering us, Humankind, the gift of free will to choose God‘s way for us – or not – but also in offering us the gift of redemption through Jesus’ birth and His presence among us on earth.
The form of this service, originally formed in England a century ago, has its own tradition.  We repeat certain parts every year: the same processional, the same concluding carol, the same nine readings “from Holy Scripture (which are) the tale of the loving purposes of God from the first days of our sin unto the glorious Redemption brought us by this Holy Child”.

The carols change each year.  Some return in later years and some each year are new.  Each relates to the Lesson it follows in the service.  This year’s service will bring us eight that are either new or we will sing in a new way as a congregation and choir.  Two of those are familiar John Rutter carols, one of which has been familiarly known around the USA as the “Volvo commercial”!  That descriptive belies its beauty and its especially lovely setting of the wondrous Robert Herrick poem which was never heard in the commercial.

As we do each year, the congregation again has an active part in the carol singing, perhaps even more this year than in some past years.  This truly is corporate worship, with participation in song by the entire congregation, with the reading of the Lessons by our pastors and staff, and by your congregation’s choir in its own special offerings to God in behalf of us all.  The date is Sunday morning, December 12th at 11 a.m.  Come, and enjoy the joy!        Ara Carapetyan
